Update of 1/16/15

water-drop-164046_640This week has been one from hell!! When it rains it pours you know!

Monday, just after I posted, one of the dialysis technicians came out and told me Mom was sick and throwing up! After a review by the nurse at dialysis and a consultation with Mom’s primary, they had me take her home and if she did not improve by tomorrow morning, they told me call in and they would have her come in. Got her home from dialysis throwing up in a bucket all the way home.

Monday night I wake up throwing up!

By Tuesday morning both of us had stopped throwing up but Mom then got the runs! We were both dead tired but I called Mom’s pcp and informed her of the developments. She proscribed a day of rest. Mom slept most of the day. I was awake and asleep all day. That night both of us fell sound asleep. We had the police and an ambulance at the apartment next to us for a domestic fight and neither of us heard them!

On Wednesday, both of us were feeling fairly well other than still being tired out. I took mom to dialysis and that went fairly well until it was time to leave and Mom sprung a leek and started bleeding all over the dialysis tech bringing her out.

On Thursday Mom’s foot pain started to elevate and she had to start taking her breakthrough pain medication.

On Friday, we went to dialysis. During dialysis, Mom’s foot pain stared getting worse and the pain meds she took before dialysis were not helping. The elevated supporting did not work, the warm packs did not work, and the topical pain cream did not help. They will not let her take oral meds during dialysis unless specifically ordered by the nephrologist!

Mom ended up coming off dialysis 12 minutes early as they could not control the pain! I gave her breakthrough medication as well as regular meds that were due in 15 minutes anyway. This did not help and by 11 a.m., I had called her vascular surgeon who is taking care of her foot for advice. I was told to take her to urgent care (aka, the walk-in clinic).

They put her in a room and paged the vascular surgeon and they would not do anything for her until he called back. He was in surgery and did not call back until 3:00 p.m.! He had put follow-up orders in the chart that they did not even look at until he called them!

Then they decided that they need to change her meds and need the consult of one of the pain management specialists. By this time it is 4:30 p.m. on a Friday night of a holiday weekend! The pain management clinic was closed so they had to page a pain management specialist and wait for them to call in.

They then decided that they would admit Mom for pain management and started admitting process. Just as they are rolling Mom from urgent care to her room an administrator comes by and states they cannot admit her as we have not tried all available home management plans. They have to take her back to urgent care so they had to page the pain management specialist again! At 7:00 p.m. a new plan is devised and a whole new medication regimen set in place for her pain.

The nurse then came in and handed us the paper prescription for the new medications as required by law because they are narcotics. While they are getting Mom dressed, I run down the hall to the clinic pharmacy to get it filled as they are open till 8:00 p.m. but accept the last new prescriptions to be filled for the day at 7:15 p.m.

I get there just in the nick of time and they bring Mom down shortly after while I am waiting for her prescriptions. I get her prescriptions at 7:55 p.m. and as soon as we got the prescriptions, I opened the bag, got the bottle of her breakthrough medications out and gave her one. I made them wait for her to take it before we left and they could lock up the pharmacy!

Then I still had to go and do laundry after I got Mom home. When at the laundry I received a call from my friend that he had just received a call that his weekday service was dropping him effective after Tuesday’s services next week (1/20/15)! His MCO was closed for they weekend and will not be open Monday due to MLK Jr. Day so cannot reach them to make arrangements for a new service until Tuesday morning. It seems to take them at least one week to get another service in so looks like I am it for him starting next Wednesday until heaven knows when!

CALGON, take me away!
