drawing-pad-1209781_640As part of our National Caregiving Conference, we’re co-hosting the First Annual National Caregiving Technology and Product Pitch Event with Aging 2.0. Our contest began with our call for caregiving innovators to to share a product, service, device or technology which can solve one of these three pressing problems family caregivers face:

  1. loneliness;

  2. financial strain;

  3. worries about a caree’s safety and well-being, including a way to track a caree’s daily condition.


We're now ready to vote! You'll want to choose your favorite product, service, device or idea from our entries. Watch the videos, below, and then cast your vote in our poll at the bottom of this post. Remember, you're voting for your top choice which solves a family caregiver's loneliness or financial strain or worries about a caree's safety and well-being. You can only vote once for your top choice.

The three entries that receive the most votes will receive a free exhibit table at our First Annual National Caregiving Conference. At the conference we’ll vote for our favorite of the three and announce the winner on December 3 during our conference closing session. The contest winner receives $250 in cash and will be featured on Caregiving.com and on an episode of Your Caregiving Journey, our Internet talk show.

1. EasyUndies, LLC


EasyUndies is passionately devoted to providing an easy, comfortable underwear experience for people with virtually any condition that limits range of motion. It’s our belief that something as simple as putting on and taking off underwear should be as easy and pain-free as possible.

During development we strove to perfect the function of EasyUndies, but we were also driven to make the garments look and feel like regular underwear, because we think maintaining a person’s dignity is essential.

A deep sense of obligation to our customers fuels the spirit of innovation at EasyUndies. It keeps us endlessly curious and focused on finding new ways to improve and expand our product line. Our customers face challenges; it’s our job to offer solutions -- to make things easier.


2. Cariloop


Cariloop provides comprehensive services and tools that help families plan for and manage the care of aging loved ones. Using an innovative and transparent approach, the company offers qualified healthcare coaches through a variety of channels and online case management tools for easy accessibility to a complete solution.

Cariloop is the first company of its kind to pair a healthcare coaching service with a technology platform where users can easily communicate with their personal healthcare coach and can access important documents and discussion threads in one centralized location.

When an aging loved one experiences a health crisis, his or her family members are left with the responsibility of figuring out what to do next. With minimal caregiving experience, those family members are forced to spend hours of their day figuring out how to navigate the complicated healthcare system--all while dealing with their own personal stress, anxiety and grief from their loved one's deteriorating health.

Cariloop believes that caregivers should never have to go through the process of caring for an aging loved one alone. Cariloop's dedicated healthcare coaches walk with members through their caregiving journey and provide the guidance and advice that is so valuable during a health crisis. With Cariloop, caregivers can have peace of mind knowing that they are not alone in their situation and that they can draw on the knowledge of a coach that has walked with people through so many different caregiving situations.


3. RapidSOS


RapidSOS aims to alleviate the worries about a caree’s safety and well-being through the use of technology. RapidSOS Haven is a mobile app that keeps the family and caregivers and carees connected and safe. Haven has a feature called Family Connect and a self-serve help feature called One-Touch-911.

Today, there are 180 million mobile 911 calls and all of them rely only on a voice connection, meaning that a person must have a full conversation to convey their location and any other emergency information. Caregivers are constantly worried about the ability of the people they care for to get the help they need. With One-Touch-911, Haven facilitates that process. If the person you care for finds themselves in an unknown place after wandering off or experiences a medical emergency, Haven will send their precise location, type of emergency, and medical and demographic info to 911 with just one touch of the app screen. They can also send more information as a text if they can't speak or they can talk if they have the ability to do so. Haven will also notify emergency contacts such as the caregiver of the situation.

With Family Connect, caregivers can see the real-time location of those they care for. Users can also check-in with each other proactively with a simple tap of your phone's screen. For the first time, caregivers can even call 911 on behalf of those they are caring for regardless of where they are. When they call 911 on behalf of others, Haven will connect them to the 911 center closest to the person in danger and will transmit that person's location and medical/demographic info to 911.

Haven transforms the outcome of emergency (6.9% reduction in healthcare costs, 20% reduction in property damage, and 2-10% reduction in mortality) and provides peace of mind to caregivers and families.


4. Luna Lights


At Luna Lights, we're focused on developing products that provide older adults with tangible benefits. Our products seamlessly integrate into the lives of older adults, so they don’t need to make lifestyle compromises to remain happy, healthy, and independent. We're currently rolling out an automated lighting system that utilizes cloud based data analytics to reduce the risk of falling at night.

Luna Lights consists of an ultra-thin pressure sensor that detects when a user gets out of bed and immediately turns on small, wireless lights around the home. When the user returns to his or her bed, the sensor turns the lights off automatically. Additionally, a software component collects data regarding the frequency and duration that an adult is out of bed at night. Our system sends a text notification to a caregiver if an older adult is out of bed for an unreasonable amount of time. It also allows caregivers to identify trends in nighttime trips and see which individuals are most at risk for falling.

Not only does Luna Lights provide a safer and more luxurious nighttime experience for older adults, but it alleviates the worries about a caree's safety and well-being through providing great connectivity at night. If a fall or other emergency occurs, adult children or caregivers can have the peace of mind that they'll be notified and aid will be provided.


5. Help-Full


Help-Full makes safe and affordable eldercare possible for any family. We connect family and friends - near and far - in order to provide older adults, and their family caregivers, with assistance for the most common nonmedical caregiving tasks such as errands, rides, cooking and more. We do this by combining time banking and crowd funding concepts, together with machine learning, artificial intelligence, and matching algorithms.

Through our platform, we offer 2 ways for family and friends to help. They can either volunteer as a Helper, earn credits assisting a nearby Help-Full family, and then give credits back to their loved one; or, if they don’t have time to spare, they can buy credits. Credits can then be used by older adults and their family caregivers to get needed help. All Helpers are vetted, lightly trained and matched to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

With Help-Full, families can get the caregiving assistance they need for a fraction of the cost of other options.


6. Reassure Analytics, Inc.


Care|Mind is a simple, easy-to-use app for iOS that enables caregivers to monitor carees using Fitbit® data. Caregivers can monitor step, sleep, and heart rate activity; set up custom alerts; and track carees’ conditions and medications. These features not only bring caregivers peace of mind, but also improve connections with carees and alert caregivers to risks of potentially life-altering conditions. For this reason, we believe Care|Mind can solve all three common caregiving problems:

Alleviating Family Caregiver’s Loneliness
The Care|Mind app alleviates a family caregiver’s loneliness by allowing them to play a more active and informed role in the health and well-being of their loved ones. Whether it is using the information to better advocate for their carees during a doctor’s visit or cheering them on during recovery from an illness or surgery, Care|Mind gives caregivers the opportunity to share in the care experience instead of caring from the outside in.

Alleviating Family Caregiver’s Financial Strain
The Care|Mind app alerts caregivers of risk factors for or the progression of some serious health conditions (e.g. depression, dementia, falls, prostate cancer) and empowers them to seek out professional healthcare services for their loved ones sooner, rather than later. Many of these conditions are preceded by subtle changes in carees’ activity, sleep, and heart rate well before even the caree notices something is wrong. With Care|Mind, a caregiver can capture these changes as they are occurring, get their loved ones to their doctor’s office early, before the condition progresses to a point that requires much more costly medical intervention, such as an ER visit and/or hospitalization.

Alleviating Worries
The Care|Mind app alleviates the worries about a caree’s safety and well-being by using sound clinical data to detect potential warning signs or symptoms of conditions such as depression, dementia, falls and prostate cancer. Care|Mind analyzes data over time to alert caregivers of these subtle changes so they can proactively discuss their carees’ health with physicians and other healthcare professionals.

Moreover, through its continuous monitoring and daily summaries of step-activity, sleep, and heart rate the Care|Mind app gives caregivers and quick and easy way to check in on their loved ones and know they are safe and continuing on with their daily activities.


7. kuiddle


Non-profit Organizations and Governments are spending billions of dollars to raise awareness on increasing risk of depression due to social isolation among elderly and to provide social care for the old folks. Yet, the Ratio of volunteers to needy issue is still NOT addressed. Caring for the elderly put strains on the caregivers physically and mentally when they have to juggle between work and home. Some caregivers may have to sacrifice their job in order to provide full-time care, adding on financial stress to them - a common phenomenon known as “kaigo rishoku” in Japan. Crowdsourcing of volunteers to provide care could be a solution for it, not forgetting the significant cost savings it could bring for the stakeholders. Unfortunately, recruitment and retention of volunteers had been rather challenging in the social sector. The existing volunteering platforms are mostly done in a bulletin board manner that offer passive and one-directional matching. Elderly who needs help are unable to announce their needs in time and location on these platforms and inaccessible to information on who in the vicinity may be able to help. Furthermore, these platforms lack of engagement and incentives to retain the volunteers or to gain traction. It is also difficult to measure and track the impact from these platforms.

kuiddle wants to create a Social Platform to provide real-time, skill and location matching of those who need help to those who can help and to bring back the Community Spirit and to promote Active Ageing. Time Credit are used to gamify and incentivize more people to volunteer. Everyone can form a community with different level of trust depending the nature of the help and to ensure safety of the users.


8. Hercules Helping Hands


Social isolation is too often a part of older adults’ lives and can have serious consequences. A 2012 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) report on aging services technology defined social isolation as occurring “…when an individual has limited contact with others, and perceives that level of contact as inadequate.” The report linked social isolation with depression, considering it both a risk factor and a result of depression, which needs to be addressed when preventing and treating this mental health issue.

In an effort to improve the quality of life for our seniors and decrease social isolation Hercules Helping Hands is developing in an interactive online platform geared towards those 65 years and older who have limitations that prevent them from getting out as much as they would like. While many Seniors would prefer to get out of their homes, and connect with their communities-many are homebound, ill or disabled and therefore unable to do so without lots of assistance.

Hercules Helping Hands' Senior Life is an internet-based social activity and engagement platform geared towards eliminating social isolation and connecting older adults with peers from all across the World.

Senior life allows the user to conduct virtual group shopping, attend seminars, watch moves, participate in exercise, or learn a new skill-all from the comfort of home. The most exciting part is that the user is not alone as they partake in an activity. Rather, they participate with a friend or even a group of newly formed online friends from around the world.

This exciting platforms learns about the lifestyles, interests and goals of the senior as it identifies friends with similar interests. From there suggestions on movies, books, games and physical activities are provided to the user. The senior can partake in a variety of stimulating activities from the comfort of home. Senior Life is an amazing tool that will allow family and friends to enjoy interactive and socio-emotionally stimulating activities with a loved one.


9. Cut the Clutter Co., LLC


From the company founder, Dr. Jill Bjerke: "I created my company, Cut the Clutter Co., LLC, in 2012. We help seniors who are downsizing, moving in with family or just need to create a safe home. I had more and more clients tell me they really did not want to move if they didn’t have to and I have many caregivers tell me they needed a way to ensure the home of their loved one was safe. Out of this I created and developed the only senior safety home assessment mobile app available anywhere called Silver Spaces (SilverSpaces.com). It is purposely designed to help seniors, their families and caregivers assess their home for any changes they could make to create a secure and safe residence for the loved one to live in.

"The evaluator can do the interior or exterior, one room or a whole house. Images can be uploaded and notes taken in real time. A free Resident Questionnaire is included as a downloadable .pdf that helps the evaluator talk with the resident about the financial, health, transportation and social aspects of remaining in one’s home. There is also a functional assessment area that gathers information on the loved one’s ability to reach, sit, stand, walk, make their own food, dress, take medicine, etc. as well as questions on their vision and hearing .

"I spent over 6 years researching and developing this mobile app. It is now being used in 12 countries around the world and was demonstrated to the World Health Organization in April, 2016 as a tool to keep seniors safe on a global basis. Whether dealing with health issues, disabilities or memory deficits, the ability to evaluate a home to make it as safe as possible for the loved one is the goal of the app. Our mission is to create the best possible quality of life for both the caregiver and the person they are caring for!"


10. Nextek Creative


Looped strives to both alleviate caregivers' worries about their loved one's well being as well as their loneliness and isolation by providing a comprehensive tracking platform, as well as building a social, mobile community of caregivers.

Looped is an innovative mobile application that seeks to fulfill the unaddressed needs of family caregivers with an intuitive platform that allow caregivers to:

1. Manage their information and caregiving responsibilities in one place
2. Seamlessly coordinate with friends and family members involved in care
3. Connect users with other caregivers in the community in order to share advice, build their own support networks for practical, social, and emotional support, or simply to find other caregivers to be friends and confidantes.


11. Walking the Pag with Your Aging Loved One


The Walking the Path with Your Aging Loved One 90-day Program enable my client to proactively create plans for caring for their aging parents. Instead of focusing on just one aspect such as finance, care or housing, this program takes a holistic approach because these elements are interconnected and interdependent.
