What Do You Do When You Wake Up Way Too Early?

What Do You Do When You Wake Up Way Too Early?

moon-67909_640Recently I had begun sleeping until 6:30 a.m--what a treat. That is an automatic wake-up, no alarms here. For the last several years, like clockwork, I would wake up at 5:30 a.m. no matter what time I went to bed, be it 10 p.m. or 2 a.m. There I would be, wide awake when there was no need to be up soooo early.

Then of course there was the occasional day that I would actually sleep later, like the day I was supposed to meet Denise for the first time at the radio station I work for before she went on the air at 7:00 am. I set an alarm, but it didn't go off (set for PM instead of AM) and I woke up at 6:50! I threw on my clothes, rushed out the door, and actually made it to the studio before she went on the air. (The studio is only about 5 minutes from my house.) Just when you need to be up early, it just never fails. I used to be the person who hit snooze several times before I could drag my bum out of bed to get ready for work.

But my days of sleeping in till 6:30 seem to gone by the wayside for now. Today it was 4 a.m.! That happens more often than I like, but I hear it goes along with getting older.

Me, I get on the internet and catch up reading blogs on Caregiving.com. Still can't sleep, time to start another Zentangle Art Show--my newest "healthy" addiction.

Wonder what you do when you are wide awake in the wee hours?

I use the meditation technique of focusing on my breath. Often that helps me get back to sleep. If I am awake more than 20 minutes, I may get up and eat a banana and page through a magazine. When I start to get sleepy again (if), I will return to bed. I love my iPod and have it loaded with all kinds of podcasts and music. Something interesting but with soothing voices like NPR Fresh Air often will do the trick, too.

Ha! I completely forgot that you overslept that day. When I remember that day, I think about how fun it was to sit with you to share and laugh at breakfast after the show. \r\n\r\nGetting up too early is, well, awful. I'm glad you've got good company, though, when you do.

One thing I enjoy doing right now is looking chronologically in reverse at my granddaughter's pictures on my cell phone. what would we do without the phone.

I am up at all kinds of wee hours. My mom is up going to the bathroom it seems, every hour on the hour. I think I will start writing down the times she wakes. I hear her sawing logs in her bed and I'm wide awake. I have my phone and I have a few little games I play on my phone, I check my email, check facebook, play games some more, there's lots of tossing and turning, until I can finally get back to sleep then it's up again!!!
