What Does It Mean to be a Family Caregiver?

aid-15537_640Last week, I participated for a few moments in a Twitter chat sponsored by PBS NewsHour. Participants in the chat shared answers to these question, including this very first one posed:

What does it mean to be a family caregiver?

Many professionals participated in chat and just a few family caregivers (individuals like you who care for a family member or friend). Many of the answers referenced statistics about the number of family caregivers (66 million) and your economic value ($450 billion).

I'd love to know your answer to this question: What does it mean to be a family caregiver? Meaning, what does it mean to you? What does it mean to your day? What does it mean to your future? What does it mean to your heart? Your soul? How does it rewrite your past? What does it mean to your family? Your career?

Please share your thoughts about what being a family caregiver means to you in our comments section, below.

My experience as a family caregiver is to support a family member (church family included) with daily chores, physical support, encouragement and provide resources to facilitate a healthy lifestyle. I may not be able to do all that myself but call on my own resources such as family members, contacts with volunteer organizations and co-workers for help. It is a full-time job and the tasks of caregiving seem to be never ending. The family caregiver asks so many questions of themselves in regard to the best care they can provide. Sometimes the family caregiver second guesses their decisions and can be more prone to guilt, motivated by obligation or other unhealthy mental activities! Finding my strength in my Heavenly Father keeps me going in the right direction daily!
