The promotion is what he wants--a chance to lead a team, to make a difference, to improve the company's products and services.
On Friday, the company's vice president finally delivers the word--John has been promoted, receiving a salary and bonus package that exceeds his hopes. He celebrates with his partner on Saturday night, grateful for his partner's support and for the chance to live his dream.
On Sunday, John receives a call from his mom. "Your dad left for the store two hours ago," his mom says, "and he hasn't come back." John locates his father at the store and gets him home. He calls his sister, who lives three hours away, on Sunday evening to update her on their parents' changing situation.
And, so it begins. His father, diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease three years earlier, now needs more supervision and care. His mother, a worrier by nature, needs reassurance and an empathetic ear.
On Monday morning, with his dad settled back home and his mom calmer, John starts his new job. But, the doubts begin, too. Should I take this job now, he wonders. Is this the right time?
If you were John, what would you do?
