Words Defined by Words

Tracey Martin
Here is the other poem I wrote when I couldn't fall back to sleep over the weekend. It examines my mom's stoic personality she's had all of her life. I have always worn my heart of my sleeve. Now, since I am her 24/7 caregiver, I see cracks in the facade. Or perhaps they were always there, I just never saw it. With the vascular dementia, her coping is different. As her caregiver my coping is different, I see I can become detached from the every day stress in order to maintain my sanity. We do a subtle dance.

I care for you
but who cares for me?

I
Am
Not
Stoic

          Stuff it in

         Toughen Up

         Overcompensate

         Impermeable

        Cool

Like

You.

I
Am
A
Dishrag
          Drained

          Infirm

          Suspicious

          Hung-up

         Resentful

         Apathetic

        Guarded
Emotional

Too.

In this world, Sometimes, I am you
And sometimes,  you are me.
